First, a bit about me. I have a master’s degree in Computer Science from Harvard University and a bachelor’s degree in Information Systems and Marketing from New York University. I began my career at an investment bank. I then left my job on Wall Street where I was making money to give money away to an educational institution.

Going back to school wasn’t a decision I made lightly. I am an immigrant, and I worked hard every step of the way. Most importantly, I didn’t have a safety net should I make the wrong choice. Now, years later, I mentor others in similar situations, and I often get the question: “Should I go to graduate school?”

First, consider your reasons thoroughly. Reasons tend to vary but always end up in one of two types: personal or professional. They’re both equally valid, but their weight depends on you, your personal circumstances, and your tolerance for risk.

Personal Reasons

I went to NYU for undergraduate school, and New York City was my campus. Years later, I realized I missed having a traditional on-campus experience and truly enjoying my studies by not constantly working or applying to scholarships. I wanted to experience living on campus and being completely immersed in learning.
