My Journey Into Discovering Design
How I found my dream job and you can too!
I took my first computer software class at age 9, my first computer hardware class at age 13, and my first graphic design class at age 15. Years later, I found the perfect fit in product design. The End.
…Ok, not quite. Although helpful to the storyline, those classes weren’t the only ones I took and “product designer” wasn’t the only role I’ve held.
During my childhood, I tried ballet, karate, painting, drawing, theater…you get the point. Soon, I discovered the types of classes that kept me coming back for more.
Exploring allowed me to find pockets of interest and, eventually, the industry I wanted to be in.
When I began my college studies, I loved how business was so interdisciplinary — going from math and finance to marketing and psychology. This led me to become a project manager. And although I was good at it, my heart was not fully in it. I had to be open to changing my first gut intuition.
All the parts of the job that I enjoyed the most as a project manager, I could do as a product designer: strategic thinking, vision crafting, and cross-functional collaboration to name a few.
